The Kirsten Dunst-led dark comedy series “On Becoming a God in Central Florida” is moving to its third network home.
The one-hour series has been acquired by Showtime after it had previously been ordered to series at YouTube Premium while having first been in development at AMC. The nine-episode first season is set to debut on Aug. 25 at 10 p.m. ET on Showtime.
The series stars Dunst, Théodore Pellerin, Beth Ditto, Mel Rodriguez, and Ted Levine. Robert Funke and Matt Lutsky created and executive produce the series. George Clooney and Grant Heslov also executive produce under their Smokehouse Pictures banner along with Dunst, Charlie McDowell, and Esta Spalding. Spalding also serves as showrunner while McDowell directed the pilot. Sony’s TriStar TV will produce.
The series was a passion project for the late Suzanne Patmore Gibbs, who was the head of TriStar TV at the time of her death last March. The well-respected development executive was said to be heavily involved with the project before her death. Sarah Shepard of Smokehouse is also said to have been a champion of the show throughout the development process.
“We were immediately drawn to this stylish and subversive female empowerment story starring Kirsten Dunst as you’ve never seen her before,” said Gary Levine, co-president co-president of entertainment for Showtime. “Throw in clever writing, inventive filmmaking, a strong, diverse ensemble and some alligators, and we’re confident Showtime audiences will find ‘On Becoming a God’ irresistible!”
The acquisition comes as YouTube has dramatically scaled back its original scripted series slate. Aside from the recent third season renewal for the hit series “Cobra Kai,” YouTube has canceled shows such as “Champaign ILL,” “Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television,” “Sideswiped,” “Do You Want to See a Dead Body,” “Overthinking with Kat & June,” “Youth & Consequences,” and “Origin.”
Set in a small Orlando-adjacent town in 1992, “On Becoming a God in Central Florida” follows Krystal Stubbs (Dunst), a minimum-wage water park employee who lies, schemes and cons her way up the ranks of Founders American Merchandise (FAM) — the cultish, flag-waving, multibillion-dollar pyramid scheme that drove her to ruin in the first place, run by the powerful Obie Garbeau II (Levine). Determined to make a better life for herself, Krystal dives deep into FAM and develops a tangled relationship with FAM’s most loyal and fanatical follower Cody (Pellerin), until her business begins to affect those closest to her, including Ernie (Rodriguez), her affable water park boss, and his FAM-skeptic wife Bets (Ditto).
The cast also includes Usman Ally, Julie Benz, Melissa De Sousa, John Earl Jelks, Sharon Lawrence, Josh Fadem, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Alexander Skarsgård, and Mary Steenburgen.

Filming of “On Becoming A God In Central Florida” began in New Orleans last week & will continue through to February next year. I’ve added to the gallery some lovely pics of Kirsten on the filmset in New Orleans last Friday.
Theodore Pellerin has joined the upcoming YouTube Premium dark comedy series “On Becoming a God in Central Florida,” Variety has learned exclusively.
Set near Orlando in the early 1990s, the show centers on Krystal Gill (Kirsten Dunst), a minimum-wage-earning water park employee who will eventually scheme her way up the ranks of Founders American Merchandise: the cultish, flag waving, multi-billion dollar pyramid scheme that drove her family to ruin. Pellerin has been cast in the lead role of Cody. YouTube ordered a 10-episode first season back in June, which will begin shooting in New Orleans this October and is slated to debut in 2019.
Pellerin recently won the Revelation of the Year award for best new actor at the Gala Quebec Cinema for his work in the film “Chien de Garde.” Previously, he was named as one of TIFF’s Rising Stars and just wrapped a role in Joel Edgerton’s upcoming film “Boy Erased” opposite Lucas Hedges. He was also the lead in the film “First Light,” which premiered at the 2017 SXSW film festival. Most recently, he appeared in Xavier Dolan’s film” It’s Only the End of the World”alongside Marion Cotillard, Lea Seydoux, Vincent Cassel, and Gaspard Ulliel. He is repped by ICM Partners and Grandview.
Dunst executive produces the series as well, with George Clooney and Grant Heslov executive producing via their Smokehouse Pictures banner. It was co-created by Robert Funke and Matt Lutsky, who will executive produce in addition to writing. Esta Spalding will also executive produce and serve as showrunner, with Charlie McDowell directing the pilot and executive producing. TriStar Television will produce.

YouTube has finalized a deal for 10-episode series order to “On Becoming A God In Central Florida”, a 1990s-set one-hour dark comedy series, starring and executive produced by Kirsten Dunst. The series, set to premiere on YouTube Premium in 2019, hails from George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s Smokehouse Pictures and Sony’s TriStar Television.
On Becoming A God In Central Florida, which was previously in development at AMC, was one of the passion projects for the late TriStar TV topper Suzanne Patmore Gibbs who revived Sony Pictures TV’s label as home of female-focused material.
Written by Robert Funke and Matt Lutsky based on a spec script they wrote, On Becoming A God is set near Orlando in the early 1990s. It centers on Krystal Gill (Dunst), a minimum-wage-earning water park employee who will eventually scheme her way up the ranks of Founders American Merchandise: the cultish, flag waving, multi-billion dollar pyramid scheme that drove her family to ruin.
“In Krystal Gill, Funke and Lutsky have created a truly delicious, sometimes diabolical female character — a dirt poor, very fierce young woman who is relentless in her pursuit of the American dream inside of an Amway-like company,” Patmore Gibbs said in her last interview with Deadline before her death. “There is something incredibly compelling, heartbreaking and absurd about both she and the lost souls these multi-level marketing companies prey on, who look to find community, respect and a sense of self in all the wrong places.”
Dunst was everyone’s top choice for the role from the start and “was born to slay this role,” Patmore Gibbs said.
Funke, Lutsky, Dunst and Lanthimos executive produce alongside Esta Spalding, who will serve as showrunner, helmer Charlie McDowell (The Discovery), who will direct, and Oscar winners Clooney and Heslov (Argo) through Smokehouse. Sarah Shepard, who has been a big proponent of the project, oversees for Smokehouse.
Sony TV produces YouTube’s first big breakout original series hit, Cobra Kai, which was recently renewed for a second season.
Spider-Man alumna Dunst starred in the second season of FX’s limited series Fargo, earning Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, and co-starred in Hidden Figures.
Funke and Lutsky are repped by CAA and Peter Heller. Smokehouse Pictures is repped by CAA. Dunst is repped by UTA and Management 360. Spalding is repped by UTA. McDowell is repped by ICM Partners.
