Jesse Plemons is set to appear in the directorial debut of his Fargo co-star – and off-screen girlfriend – Kirsten Dunst.

Announced Thursday, the rising Breaking Bad, Bridge of Spies and Black Mass actor has now joined The Bell Jar, to be directed by Dunst and also starring Dakota Fanning.

Based on Sylvia Plath’s 1963 literary classic, the adaptation will see Dakota play the lead Esther Greenwood, with Plemons as Lenny Shepherd. Dunst is co-writing alongside Nellie Kim, with the film set to go into production in early 2017.

Priority Pictures optioned the re-make rights to the project from StudioCanal. Lizzie Friedman (The Stanford Prison Experiment, Ride) will produce together with Fanning and Brittany Kahan from Echo Lake Entertainment (Truth, Nebraska) with Celine Rattray (American Honey, The Kids Are Alright) and Dunst as executive producers.

Cornerstone Films has acquired The Bell Jar for international sales and will be introducing the film to buyers at the American Film Market next month. UTA is handling the North American rights.

“The themes explored in The Bell Jar resonate as strongly in 2016 as they did in 1963 when the novel was first published,” said Cornerstone’s Alison Thompson and Mark Gooder. “Kirsten Dunst’s compelling vision for the film has a vibrant authenticity that modern audiences will embrace and we are proud to be part of the team bringing her directorial debut to the marketplace.”

Having gained plenty of notice for her quippy, warm performance alongside Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe in the criminally underrated The Nice Guys, Angourie Rice has been recruited by director Sofia Coppola for her next movie, The Beguiled.

Coppola has based her script on the same Thomas Cullinan novel that powered the 1971 original, which saw Clint Eastwood as an injured Union soldier who is imprisoned in a Confederate girls’ boarding school during the Civil War. He charms his way into the hearts of women of all ages at the institution and causes jealousy and betrayal to spread.

Colin Farrell is playing the soldier this time around, with Nicole Kidman, Elle Fanning and Kirsten Dunst are all aboard as various residents of the school. Rice is joining their ranks.

The actress has scored one other high-profile job this year; she’s playing Betty Brandt in Spider-Man: Homecoming, which recently wrapped production and is aiming at a 7 July release date next year.

Kirsten Dunst is set make her feature film directorial debut with The Bell Jar, an adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s famed 1963 novel. Dakota Fanning has been set to play the lead role of Esther Greenwood in the pic, which Dunst has co-written with Nellie Kim. The Stanford Prison Experiment producer Priority Pictures optioned remake rights from Studio Canal, and production is eyed to start in first-quarter 2017.

Priority’s Lizzie Friedman, Karen Lauder and Greg Little will produce alongside Fanning and Echo Lake Entertainment’s Brittany Kahan. Celine Rattray is executive producing.

The Bell Jar is set in the 1950s and follows Greenwood, who takes an internship at a magazine in New York City and, after she returns home to Boston, begins to suffer from mental illness. A 1979 movie adaptation of the book was directed by Larry Peerce and starred Marilyn Hassett.

Dunst, just nominated for an Emmy for her work on FX’s Fargo, has directed a pair of short films: Welcome starring Winona Ryder and John Hawkes, which was screened at Sundance; and Bastard starring Brian Geraghty and Lukas Haas which screened at Tribeca and Cannes. Her recent film credits include Jeff Nichols’ Midnight Special and she’s next up in Woodstock and Ted Melfi’s Hidden Figures. Dunst is repped by UTA and Management 360.

Fanning, whose recent credits include The Secret Life Of Bees and The Runaways, is next up in Ewan McGregor’s directorial debut American Pastoral. She’s repped by CAA and Echo Lake.
